4 Untrustworthy Myths About Dental Sedation

Even if a dentist suggests it, you may hesitate to “add” dental sedation to your treatment. Some iffy rumors surround this service, enough to make many patients have doubts. Still, you really shouldn’t take these claims to heart; most of them are baseless and false. Your San Antonio practice will even outline which ones to distrust. To that end, here are four myths about dental sedation and the reasons they don’t hold up.

“It’s Highly Addictive”

A few folks claim that dental sedation is addictive, relying on sedatives that cause cravings. However, this idea is entirely and wholly untrue.

Dental sedatives can (and will) help you relax, but they aren’t physically addictive. The medicines won’t leave you with any lingering cravings, withdrawal symptoms, etc. You’ll just want to make sure you get the right dosage(s); these drugs still have a potential for misuse. If you ingest too much, you might suffer unpleasant side effects.

“It Always Wears Off Slowly”

You may think dental sedation always takes a long time to wear off. If so, you’re incorrect; its impact on you can often fade quickly.

The truth is that some dental sedatives wear off almost immediately. Nitrous oxide is a key example, as this drug’s effects usually fade within 15 to 30 minutes. Those who receive it will be well enough to drive themselves home right after their treatment.

“It Makes You Fall Asleep”

Dental sedation can sound like something that makes you sleep, especially when you know little about it. Even so, this treatment add-on does nothing of the sort.

As relaxing as they are, dental sedatives leave you awake and alert. They won’t make you fall asleep or become unaware of your surroundings. After all, the dentist will still need to share instructions with you during your treatment. They can’t do that if you’re spending your visit snoozing.

“It’s Only for Adults”

Since it involves drugs, you could easily assume that sedation is only for adults. You’d be wrong to do that, though; sedation dentistry works for all ages.

Indeed, dental sedatives can work safely on kids and adults alike. “Light” ones are even well-suited for children, ensuring they relax while a dentist operates on their teeth. Similarly, sedatives won’t cause any harm to senior citizens.

Despite the myths about dental sedation, this aspect of dentistry is nothing to fear. Feel free to add it to your future care!
