They’re basically a backup set of molars that we don’t really need, don’t really use, and in many cases, might have to have extracted. But why do we get them, and why on earth do they sometimes grow sideways? If you’re wondering what’s up with those weird, extra teeth, here are a few fascinating facts!

Why Do We Get Wisdom Teeth?

Researchers believe that wisdom teeth were once very important in early man, because they acted as a spare set of molars to replace teeth that had become worn with time. Thanks to ancient diets, many foods were much harder to chew, resulting in more wear and tear. In time, the first set of adult teeth became difficult to use, so the wisdom teeth appeared just in time to save the day.

Over the centuries, however, they became less important. Between modern diets that contain more cooked and softer, processed foods, backup teeth were no longer needed. But they still grow in from about age 17 to 26, regardless of if they serve any current purpose.

Why Do Wisdom Teeth Grow Sideways?

One notable trait of some wisdom teeth is that they sometimes grow sideways. Evidence suggests that this is because as mankind has evolved, the jaw has gotten smaller and thus there is less room for them to fit in properly in. Thus, they come in at an angle, and unfortunately can cause a lot of damage by doing so.

What Happens If My Wisdom Teeth Are Growing Sideways?

If you have sideways-growing wisdom teeth, they should be removed before they cause any damage to your other teeth. They can sometimes cause them to break, or they can cause cysts, pain, or misalignment of the bite which could in turn require orthodontic work to repair. This condition is known as impaction, and it’s very common in teens and young adults.

If your wisdom teeth are impacted, your dentist will recommend an appropriate course of action. Most likely they will need to be removed, however this is a very important procedure in protecting your teeth and gums from further discomfort and damage, so if it is recommended rest assured that it is necessary.

About Dr. Kadamani

Dr. Racha W.
